Field Care:

Don't cut your cape too short!  BEHIND the front legs gives us enough to work with and helps to avoid additional costs for form alteration. A new cape can be upwards of $250!

Go to our Links page to see a quick video on how to cape your animal.  Click here for a link to McKenzie's Trophy Field Care  Guide.

Many trophies are ruined in the first few hours after kill, as bacteria attack the carcass.  Treat your hide as you would your meat.  Keep it  cold and get it to us immediately. Waiting too long can cause slippage (hair loss) that can be irreparable. If using an ice chest, place either the meat or the ice in a plastic bag to keep the meat from soaking in water.  If the meat is in a bag, keep it open at the top so it can breathe.

Try to leave caping to us.  Skinning delicate areas like the nose, mouth, eyes and ears can mean the difference between a quality mount and a lot of hours spent making repairs. Repairs will add to the cost of your mount, and sometimes damage to a hide can be irreparable, and we are left with no choice but to buy a new cape for your mount.

When you are hunting in remote areas, and time will not allow for proper preservation, call us prior to your trip for techniques to skin out the entire cape.  This may be the only way to preserve your hide for mounting if you are not able to bring it in immediately. Hides must have all the meat and especially the fat removed before salting with non-iodized salt (never rock-salt), which may be purchased at most tack and feed stores.  DON'T USE SALT UNLESS NECESSARY -- remote hunting, long transport time.

Always bring the appropriate taxidermy tags with your trophies.

Don't skin or gut a small mammal (coyote or smaller)!  Call us to arrange to bring it in immediately.  If you can't get it to us immediately, wait for the carcass to cool completely, put it in a plastic bag, and freeze it.  Be sure to use rubber or latex gloves and thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water after handling.

BEAR SERVICE
$50 will keep us on call for the day of your bear hunt within a 50 mile radius of Virginia City.  Once you have your kill down, call us and we will come out to cape it in the field for you and transport the hide back to our studio for further processing.  The total  fee for the caping service is $300 (the on-call charge is included in the total fee and is non-refundable if your hunt is not successful).  Each additional day will incur a seperate on-call charge.

Paul Lorring - Dall Sheep

Picture
I wanted to let you know that I went out to a "national sporting goods store" last weekend.  I looked very closely at all of their sheep mounts, especially the Dalls.  Every one looked out of proportion.  They all had nice full curl horns with large bases, but the neck and shoulders looked like they belonged to an immature ram.  There was just something amiss.
The mount you did for me is definitely superior. It looks like the sheep that I shot, standing tall and strong, high up on a rock looking majestic as they are. The custom position we worked on together is way more realistic and natural. It definately sets it apart from any other mount that I've seen. Thanks again for memories of a lifetime.

Tanning:
Tanning is a complex chemical process that requires great skill to do right.  We have had good and bad experiences with a number of tanneries, and have finally found some that meet and exceed Rob's high quality expectations.  You may rest assured that your trophy will be handled professionally.  If you're interested in tanning only on an item, please contact us for a quote.
